Abishan Ashley Represents YMCA Batticaloa at Prestigious Commonwealth Youth Conference in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – APRIL 2019
In a powerful stride for Sri Lankan youth representation on the global stage, Abishan Ashley, a dedicated youth leader from YMCA Batticaloa, participated in the Commonwealth Regional Youth Conference on Peace and Security held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The fully funded program brought together emerging changemakers from across South and Southeast Asia to advance dialogue and action around peacebuilding and security.

Empowering Future Leaders for Peace and Security

The conference, hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Royal Commonwealth Society, focused on equipping participants aged 18–22 with essential skills in community leadership, countering violent extremism, digital literacy, and civic engagement. The initiative reflects the Commonwealth’s broader mission to strengthen youth participation in global peace and development efforts.

A Voice from Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province

Representing YMCA Batticaloa, Abishan Ashley’s selection to this prestigious international gathering highlights his dedication to youth empowerment and community resilience in Sri Lanka. His presence added a valuable perspective to discussions on inclusive peace strategies and grassroots activism in multicultural societies.

Innovative Engagement and Simulation Exercises

A unique aspect of the program was a simulation of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), in which participants assumed the roles of national leaders to debate real-world geopolitical challenges. This immersive exercise not only sharpened leadership and negotiation skills but also encouraged critical thinking and cross-cultural collaboration.

Returning with a Vision for Local Impact

Following his participation, Abishan Ashley is expected to translate his learning into action by leading youth-focused initiatives in his home community. His experience serves as an inspiration to peers across the Eastern Province and reinforces YMCA Batticaloa’s commitment to nurturing globally aware and locally active young leaders.

This engagement marks a proud moment for YMCA Batticaloa and underscores the important role Sri Lankan youth continue to play in shaping a peaceful and inclusive future within the Commonwealth and beyond.
