A Tribute to the Guiding Lights of Knowledge: YMCA Celebrates Teachers’ Day 2025

Honoring the Educators Who Shape Minds and Inspire Hearts at YMCA Vaalvosai School

On the 10th of October 2025, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Batticaloa came alive with joy and heartfelt gratitude as it hosted a memorable Teachers’ Day Celebration to honor the dedicated educators of the YMCA Vaalvosai School. The event was a warm expression of love, appreciation, and recognition for those who have devoted their lives to the noble art of teaching.

It was a day filled with emotion, reflection, and celebration — a reminder that teachers are not only transmitters of knowledge but also architects of humanity, shaping the moral and intellectual foundation of every generation that passes through their classrooms.

The Atmosphere of Appreciation

The event began in a beautifully decorated hall within the YMCA premises, where the air was charged with excitement. Teachers, students, staff members, and guests gathered with smiles and anticipation. The backdrop carried a simple yet powerful message: “To Teach Is to Touch a Life Forever.”

The setting reflected both creativity and reverence — a blend of balloons, floral arrangements, and handmade posters created by students, each carrying words of gratitude. The joyful energy in the room symbolized the deep bond between teachers and students, and the respect that lies at the core of the YMCA’s educational spirit.

Welcome Address by Professor J. Kennedy, President of YMCA Batticaloa

The ceremony commenced with a heartfelt welcome address by Professor J. Kennedy, the President of YMCA Batticaloa. With his characteristic warmth and eloquence, he extended greetings to all teachers and guests, setting an inspiring tone for the morning.

Prof. Kennedy began by acknowledging the extraordinary dedication of teachers at YMCA Vaalvosai School, commending their steadfast efforts to nurture students with both academic knowledge and strong moral values. He reminded everyone that the YMCA’s educational mission has always gone beyond the classroom — it is about forming character, faith, and responsibility.

Message of the Day by Rev. Fr. Jemildon

The day’s chief message was delivered by Rev. Fr. Jemildon, whose presence and words added a deep spiritual dimension to the celebration. His address, grounded in wisdom and faith, reminded everyone that teaching is not merely a job but a sacred vocation.

Speaking with calm conviction, Rev. Fr. Jemildon compared teachers to candles that give light by burning themselves, beautifully portraying the self-sacrificial nature of the profession.

“Teachers are like candles,” he said, “they consume themselves so that others may shine. Their warmth brightens countless lives, and their light continues to guide even when they are no longer present.”

He reflected on how education, when guided by love and integrity, becomes an act of service to God and humanity. Quoting from Matthew 5:14 — “You are the light of the world” — he reminded teachers that every lesson, no matter how small, has eternal significance when taught with sincerity and compassion.

Rev. Fr. Jemildon also spoke about the importance of patience and humility in teaching. In a world often obsessed with quick success, he said, teachers embody endurance — sowing seeds that may take years to bear fruit. Yet, they do so faithfully, without expecting personal gain, because they believe in the power of transformation.

His words resonated deeply across the audience. Many teachers nodded thoughtfully as he concluded by encouraging them to continue their journey with strength, prayer, and joy, knowing that their labor shapes not only futures but also hearts.

Tokens of Love from the YMCA Team and Children

One of the most touching moments of the day came when the YMCA team and the students together presented thoughtful gifts to their teachers. Smiling students stepped forward with Appreciation videos, small gift parcels, and bouquets of flowers, expressing their gratitude in the most genuine way. The gifts, lovingly prepared by the children and supported by the YMCA team, symbolized heartfelt thanks rather than material value.

Teachers, visibly moved, received their tokens with humility and joy. The room overflowed with applause and emotion—a beautiful blend of laughter, appreciation, and even a few happy tears.
It was a vivid reminder that gratitude, when expressed collectively, strengthens the bond between teacher and learner in the most profound way.

Reflections from Teachers

Following the presentations, several educators shared short reflections about their experiences. They spoke of the challenges and rewards of shaping young minds, and the fulfillment that comes from seeing their students succeed.

Head teacher, Mrs Mathi expressed,

“Teaching here at YMCA Vaalvosai is not only about academics; it’s about transforming lives. Every year brings a new story, a new lesson, and a new reason to keep us going.”
