Regional Workshop on Gender-Based Violence Prevention in Eastern Sri Lanka 2026
Regional Workshop on Gender-Based Violence Prevention Begins in Batticaloa
The Regional Workshop on Gender and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention commenced successfully at YMCA Batticaloa on 7 August 2026. Bringing together YMCA leaders and community partners from across the North and Eastern regions, the two-day programme aims to strengthen local knowledge and action to prevent GBV.
A total of 62 participants are taking part, representing Akkaraipattu, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Kilinochchi, Valaichchenai, Pandateruppu, Ampara YMCA, and FHS Kallar. Their participation reflects a shared commitment to making communities safer, more inclusive, and free from violence.
Sharing Experiences and Building Local Action
Throughout the opening sessions, participants have been actively engaging in discussions, sharing experiences, and considering how communities can respond to and prevent gender-based violence. These conversations help connect broader principles of gender equality and safety with the realities faced by local communities.
The workshop also provides an opportunity for participants to learn from one another. By bringing together representatives from different locations and organizations, the programme encourages the exchange of practical ideas and helps strengthen relationships among community-based groups.
Such collaboration is important because effective GBV prevention depends on understanding local contexts and working together. YMCA leaders and community partners can play a valuable role in promoting respectful relationships, challenging harmful attitudes, and supporting safer environments for everyone.

Experienced Facilitators Guide the Workshop
The training sessions are being facilitated by Mr. Niranga, General Secretary of the National Council of YMCA of Sri Lanka, together with Mr. Ramesh, General Secretary of Negombo YMCA. They are sharing their expertise and providing guidance throughout the workshop.
Their facilitation supports participants as they explore key concepts, reflect on community experiences, and consider ways to strengthen prevention efforts. The sessions are designed to build both knowledge and practical skills that participants can apply through their work and community engagement.
Strengthening Prevention Across the Region
The regional initiative aims to build the knowledge, skills, and commitment of YMCA leaders and community partners. By investing in learning and cooperation, the workshop seeks to support stronger community-based efforts to prevent GBV across the North and Eastern regions.
Key areas of focus include:
- Increasing understanding of gender and gender-based violence
- Encouraging open discussion and shared learning
- Strengthening the capacity of community partners
- Supporting safer, more inclusive environments
- Building commitment to local prevention efforts
These goals extend beyond the workshop itself. Participants can bring the ideas and skills they develop back to their respective organizations and communities, helping to broaden awareness and encourage continued action.
A Shared Commitment to Safer Communities
The successful commencement of the workshop marks an important step in strengthening regional collaboration on GBV prevention. With 62 participants contributing their perspectives and the guidance of experienced YMCA facilitators, the programme provides a space for learning, reflection, and collective planning.
Preventing gender-based violence requires sustained effort from organizations, community leaders, and individuals. Through initiatives such as this regional workshop, YMCA leaders and their partners can deepen their understanding, strengthen their capacity, and work together toward communities where everyone can live with dignity, safety, and inclusion.
